Ken Double has often chuckled upon reflecting on his nearly 50 years as a performer on radio, television and seated at the consoles of the great theatre pipe organs across the world.
“Imagine,” he says, “I got paid to have fun TWICE in my life!”
The former WRTV Channel 6/Indy 500/Indiana Pacers/Purdue basketball and Indianapolis Ice sportscaster - who started taking organ lessons as an 8-year-old in his hometown Chicago - enjoyed a 33-year career as a sportscaster, and now a second career focused on his love of the music of the theatre pipe organ.
Ken Double was born in Chicago, IL, the last of six boys in a sports-loving family. He often tells of his earliest childhood memories involving sitting on the den couch; his mother ironing; and Cubs baseball on television. He became enamored of the long-time television “Voice of the Cubs,” Jack Brickhouse, and knew as a child that sportscasting would be his calling.
His parents introduced each child to some form of music, and for Ken it was organ lessons. Born with just a bit of the “ham in him,” Ken found an outlet to perform in the organ lessons. In high school, he also found radio station WMTH-FM, one of the few licensed school FM stations in the nation, which allowed Ken to begin to seriously pursue his sportscasting dreams.
At the same time, a music teacher took a group on a field trip, which introduced Ken to the Mighty Wurlitzer organ at the Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge, IL – which was a bicycle ride away from home. A later trip to the Oriental Theatre to hear Gaylord Carter in concert got Ken completely hooked on the sounds of the theatre pipe organ, and a second love-affair was born.
Double received his degree in Radio-TV from Butler University in Indianapolis, and began his sportscasting career, but never totally left the music of the theatre organ out of his life.
As a sportscaster, Ken broadcast NBA and major college basketball, NHL, IHL and AHL hockey, the worldwide broadcast of the Indy 500, and more. All of this after eight years doing news and sports on radio and TV at WBAT in Marion; WLFI-TV in Lafayette; and then WRTV in Indianapolis.
But since retiring from sports in 2008, Ken has performed concerts on the great theatre pipe organs around the world. He performed at the famed Paramount Music Palace in Indianapolis in the 1980’s; helped establish the Long Center Theatre Organ Society in Lafayette, Indiana where last June he performed his 40th anniversary concert on that pipe organ; played the opening public concerts on the post-restoration organs at Manual HS, the Anderson Paramount Theatre, and 25 years ago, here at the Warren Performing Arts Center on the historic Barton organ.
Ken spent ten years as the President of the American Theatre Organ Society; and for a time was the Director of Fundraising for the Historic Organ Restoration Committee, the organization restoring the largest musical instrument in the world, the Midmer-Losh organ at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. All this in addition to his consulting and performing work at the Atlanta Fox on the beloved “Might Mo” Moller theatre pipe organ.
Ken Double performed his first public concert in 1978 at the Embassy Theatre in Ft. Wayne; has more than 20 recordings to his credit; has toured Australia eight times; and has been the Master of Ceremonies for more than 25 ATOS annual and regional conventions.
Daniel Mata has accomplished much in a short time. Born in Venezuela one of triplets and
raised in Atlanta, GA, he is a 2019 graduate of prestigious Belmont University in Nashville.
His brilliance is reflected in his studies of voice, psychology and pre-med, having been awarded the Hearst Scholarship over nearly 9,000 nationwide candidates.
At age 15, he won the Georgia-wide Stars of Tomorrow vocal contest, which helped provide him the opportunity to sing at the Atlanta Fox Theatre’s holiday show; solo at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome; perform the national anthem at both the NBA Hawks and NFL Falcons events; and headline his own concert performance with Ken Double at the Strand Theatre in Marietta, GA.
Daniel and Ken have performed nearly 20 concerts together, and Daniel has been featured on local Atlanta television, on Univision and CNN.
As a P.A. (Physician’s Assistant), Daniel is furthering his medical career having been awarded a Fellowship at the prestigious M. D. Anderson Cancer Clinic in Houston, TX, where he currently calls home.
A cross-over artist comfortable with opera, Latin, standards and pops, Daniel Mata has been thrilling audiences for over 12 years with his amazing vocal talents. The Central Indiana Chapter of ATOS is delighted to bring this talented vocalist to the Warren Center for the Performing Arts for this special anniversary concert.
